Civilization 7 Dev Recommends Even Experts Stick With the Tutorial for Their First Full Campaign — Here’s Why

Civilization 7 The developer of Civilization 7 has explained why even veteran players should consider playing through the tutorial before starting their first full campaign.

In a post on Steam, Ed Beach, creative director at Firaxis Games, shared insights on how to best approach Civilization 7.

“Civilization 7 introduces several new systems and mechanics that set it apart from previous entries,” Beach stated. “With so much to learn, we felt it was important to provide guidance for a smooth first experience.”

The New Ages System

One major change in Civilization 7 is the **Ages system**, which divides the game into three phases: **Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern**. Once an Age is completed, all players (including AI opponents) transition simultaneously. During an **Age Transition**, players must choose a new civilization, retain Legacies from the previous Age, and adapt to an evolving game world.

Why Small Maps Are the Default

Beach also explained why the default map size for Civilization 7 is set to Small.

“We know many experienced players enjoy massive maps with numerous rival empires,” he said. “However, we intentionally chose Small as the default to create a more balanced and engaging early experience.”

With three other empires on the same continent and additional civilizations appearing later, Small maps provide a more manageable introduction to the game’s mechanics, particularly the **new Diplomacy system**. “It’s easier to track relationships and manage Diplomatic Influence when dealing with fewer opponents,” Beach noted.

Additionally, the **Continents Plus** map type is recommended. The nearby islands help introduce players to ocean exploration, a key feature in the **Exploration Age**.

Why Even Veterans Should Use the Tutorial

Upon starting their first game, players will find the **Tutorial enabled by default**. Beach strongly advises even long-time Civ players to keep it on for at least their first full playthrough.

“The tutorial provides real-time guidance whenever players encounter something new,” Beach explained. “Even seasoned Civ fans may find it helpful, as many core game systems have been updated.”

Players can also customize their **Advisors**, choosing which guidance they receive. For those who prefer a less guided experience, Beach recommends enabling the **Only Warnings** setting instead of turning off Advisors entirely. “This way, players still receive alerts when their empire faces significant setbacks,” he said.

Civilization 7 Release & Post-Launch Plans

Firaxis has also revealed Civilization 7’s post-launch roadmap in a special livestream event. Notably, Great Britain will be available as DLC.

Civilization 7 officially launches on **February 11, 2025**, for **PC (via Steam), Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S**. Players who purchase the **Deluxe Edition** can access the game **early on February 6**.
