Creator of Bloodborne 60fps Patch Says Sony Has Sent Him a DMCA Takedown — but Why Now?

A well-known developer behind the unofficial Bloodborne 60fps patch has revealed that Sony has issued a DMCA takedown request regarding the modification.
Modder and hacker Lance McDonald shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating that Sony Interactive Entertainment requested the removal of links to his patch. "I’ve complied and taken them down," he added.
McDonald also referenced a past YouTube video showcasing the Bloodborne 60fps patch, originally released in 2021. He recalled an interaction with former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, in which he mentioned creating the patch. "I told him I worked on PlayStation game mods," McDonald said. "When I mentioned the 60fps patch for Bloodborne, he laughed out loud."
Bloodborne has remained a hot topic among fans since its PS4 launch. Despite its critical and commercial success, Sony has yet to release an official 60fps patch, a remaster, or a sequel—leaving the community to find its own solutions.
Recently, PS4 emulators have enabled the game to run at 60fps on PC, bringing new life to the title. A recent Digital Foundry analysis highlighted advancements in PS4 emulation through ShadPS4, making Bloodborne fully playable at higher frame rates. This breakthrough has led to speculation about whether Sony's actions against McDonald's patch were influenced by these developments. IGN has reached out to Sony for a response.
Earlier this month, Yoshida shared his thoughts on why Bloodborne has yet to receive an update or re-release. Speaking in an interview with Kinda Funny Games, he explained:
“Bloodborne is always at the top of the list when it comes to fan requests. Many wonder why no remaster or update has been made, especially given PlayStation’s history of re-releases. Some fans get frustrated because it seems like an easy thing to do."
Yoshida then shared his personal theory, emphasizing that he no longer has inside knowledge of PlayStation’s first-party decisions. "I remember Miyazaki-san being extremely passionate about Bloodborne. He loved what he created. I think he’s interested in revisiting it but is too busy, and he may not want someone else handling it. My guess is that PlayStation respects his wishes."
Despite the continued silence from Sony, many fans remain hopeful. Miyazaki has frequently avoided direct questions about Bloodborne, noting that FromSoftware does not own the IP. However, in a 2023 interview, he acknowledged that the game would benefit from modern hardware.
