Spider-Man 2 Debuts to 'Mixed' Steam Reviews Amid Serious PC Performance Problems

Anticipation was high for Spider-Man 2 on PC, especially after its seemingly reasonable system requirements were revealed. However, the Nixxes-developed port has launched to a ‘mixed’ rating on Steam, with many users citing technical issues.

Currently, only 55% of Steam reviews are positive. “Despite running an RTX 4090 with the latest Nvidia drivers (5.66.36), the game crashes constantly,” one player reported. Another user stated: “The game is completely unplayable, crashing to desktop every five minutes. I’ve already requested a refund.”

A common sentiment among reviews is to wait for updates. “Hold off on buying until they release a few stability patches,” one review warns. “Calling this ‘rough’ is an understatement—lighting doesn’t load in certain cutscenes, frame rates plummet, audio desync is rampant, and freezing and stuttering are frequent.”

Many of the crashes appear linked to the game’s graphics controller. According to one review, an error message reads: “A problem has occurred with your display driver. This could be due to outdated drivers, settings too high for your GPU, overheating, or a game error. Try updating drivers or lowering in-game settings.”

Additional complaints mention that DLSS and ray tracing are not functioning correctly, while others report long loading times, missing textures, and inconsistent audio.

Some players allege that after several hours of gameplay, performance degrades significantly before leading to a hard crash. A few suspect a memory leak as the cause.

Nixxes has acknowledged the issues on Steam forums, responding to one user: “Sorry to hear you are experiencing problems.

“Please check our troubleshooting guides on the Nixxes Support website and reach out if the issue persists. Be sure to include your logs and crash dumps as outlined on our site so we can investigate as quickly as possible.”

Additionally, the team is aware of a bug affecting photo-op missions. “If your framerate drops below 20 FPS during this scene, it can cause issues. As a workaround, try lowering your graphics settings or resolution to proceed.”
